Brendan Rodgers is one of several options the Boston Red Sox have to play a regular role in a crowded infield. However, he will not have a shot at playing regularly because he underwent season-ending shoulder surgery before the start of the 2026 season.
Rodgers appeared in 43 games with the Houston Astros in 2025, hitting a mere .191 with a .544 OPS, 2 homers, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored across 128 plate appearances. His last full season, however, was the 2024 campaign, when he hit .267 with a .721 OPS, 13 homers and 54 RBIs across 135 games with the Colorado Rockies. Will that be enough to make him a player worth targeting in fantasy?

Rodgers’ recent shoulder problem undoubtedly hurts his upside and changes his fantasy outlook completely. He went from being a candidate for a bench role with Boston to missing the entire 2026 season.
It’s worth noting that Rodgers hurt his shoulder in Grapefruit League action versus the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, Feb. 25, when he reached for a ball after a diving attempt at second base. Even though the initial tests were positive, the fact that neither the CT scan nor the MRI delivered good results is concerning, to say the least. Red Sox manager Alex Cora previously revealed that Rodgers would miss time, and he ultimately underwent right shoulder labral revision surgery.
That means Rodgers does not have upside in fantasy. The severity of the injury and the fact that he required surgery after poor results on the initial tests confirm the injury was more complicated than initially expected. With him missing the entire season, it’s certain that Rodgers will not have a role for Boston in 2026.
Rodgers was one of several players competing for a bench and utility role in the infield, but not anymore. Given that he’s dealing with a season-ending injury, and that he wasn’t going to have a big role even if healthy, Rodgers is better suited to remain on the waiver wire in most formats. If you’re looking for upside or a decent floor in the final rounds of your draft, you can look at better options than Rodgers, especially considering his recent injury woes.
