Yainer Diaz’s 2025 Regression Still Leaves Astros Catcher as Top-12 Fantasy Option

Yainer Diaz took a step back in the 2025 fantasy baseball season, as the majority of his numbers suffered a regression across the board. However, his role as the starting catcher for the Houston Astros is not under any sort of threat, and given the lack of reliable impact players in fantasy at the position, Diaz should still have a steady role in fantasy in the upcoming 2026 campaign.

Diaz hit a career-worst .256 in 143 games and 567 plate appearances in 2025. He also posted a .701 OPS, 20 home runs, 70 RBI, and 56 runs scored.

For the sake of comparison, the Dominican backstop hit .299 with a .766 OPS, 16 homers, 84 RBI, and 70 runs scored in 2024, and he posted an .846 OPS in 2023. Is this a trend of things to come, or will Diaz be able to bounce back in 2026?

Yainer Diaz 2026 Fantasy Baseball: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Projections

The catcher position is one of the least-talented positions in the majors ahead of the 2026 fantasy baseball season. There is one elite option in Cal Raleigh and a few proven, steady performers.

For the most part, though, the majority of the starting catchers have at least one or two flaws in their game. That’s no different with Diaz, although the 27-year-old catcher can be a serviceable starter.

With an ADP around the No. 140 or No. 150 range, Diaz should be a player worth targeting around the 12th or 13th round, not sooner. Among catchers, however, Diaz is ranked as a top-12 catcher, meaning he should be a starter in most formats.

That’s not surprising when we analyze his power and run-production numbers. In his three full seasons in the majors, Diaz has had at least 16 homers, 60 RBI, 50 runs, and 20 doubles.

Diaz can certainly hit for power, but he’s far from being a consistent hitter, and that limits his upside in most formats. If Diaz is able to put up numbers close to what he delivered in 2023 or 2024, however, that uptick could go a long way toward his status of being ranked higher among catchers.

The lone area in which Diaz doesn’t produce much in fantasy is the walks department. He has walked in under 4% of his plate appearances in his three full seasons in the majors.

All things considered, Diaz could be a solid option at catcher and has enough tools to be considered a starter in fantasy in most formats. He still has room to grow, though, and if he’s able to hit as he did in 2023 or 2024, he has a strong chance to outperform his ADP in 2026.
